Introduction

Buying or selling a used two-wheeler is quite common in India. But one important legal formality that many people tend to overlook is transferring bike ownership officially at the RTO. Without this step, the previous owner might remain liable for future traffic fines, insurance claims, or worse—legal issues.

  • 🚫 Seller won't be liable for traffic challans or insurance issues
  • ✅ Buyer can claim insurance and legally drive the vehicle
  • 💼 Required for resale, loan processing, or insurance claims
  • 🛡 Avoids any future disputes regarding ownership

Situations When Bike Ownership Transfer Is Needed

  1. Sale of a used bike to another person
  2. Transfer within family (gift or inheritance)
  3. Ownership transfer due to death of registered owner
  4. Change of address or RTO within the same or different state
  5. Inter-state purchase and migration
